Plaza Renovation
In the 1980s, Greeley closed vehicular access to two, one-block sections in the heart of downtown in an ill-fated attempt to revitalize their downtown economy. The result was two overgrown plazas that cut off access to the buildings, hid graceful historic storefronts and discouraged pedestrian traffic. By 2000, downtown Greeley was in such sad shape that Colorado Preservation Inc. named it on their Most Endangered Places list. The re-opening of what was historically a multi-use plaza became the priority for this pedestrian friendly plaza renovation. It took two years to put together a funding package before the design process began. The outcome? A new dinner theater and an upscale bar have opened; a restaurant is expanding; residential lofts have come to downtown; private reinvestment in properties has increased; and the Friday Fest lunch hour concert series is being held on the Ninth Street plaza!
